New Fandotech® Survive™ Services Provide Customers with Fast, Cost-Effective and Virtualized Data Center Backup, Restoration and Recovery Services, and Employee Access to Systems and Data

Manchester, CT, September 27, 2012Fandotech®, a division of Industrial Defender and provider of business continuance solutions, today announced Fandotech® Disaster Recovery Service and Fandotech® Survive™ Business Continuance Service* that provide enterprises with quick and cost effective solutions to backup, recover and restore their data and applications within a virtual computing environment. After the declaration of an event, these services can enable any business to continue its operations almost uninterrupted and allow employees to quickly continue their work.

“Fandotech came through when we needed them and we were able to continue doing business after we lost everything,” said Phil Klimoski, IT Director at Square One Children’s Center. “With their [Survive Disaster Recovery] program we were able to make payroll and pay our bills on time. We continue to use the program because it has been proven to work and I can feel confident our data will be safe and available when we need it.”

Fandotech Survive Disaster Recovery Service builds on the strength of the Fandotech® Survive™ Offsite Backup Service and allows customer data to be quickly loaded onto virtual machines at Fandotech SSAE/16 type II certified data centers following a declared event. Fandotech then serves as the customer’s primary data environment by initiating virtual servers and restoring verified backups to minimize downtime, save time and money. Until the customer’s data environment once again becomes operational, their end-users can remotely access servers, files, databases, email and other restored business systems. Fandotech Survive Disaster Recovery Service features:

  • Fandotech Survive Offsite Backup Service
    • Secure on-site and in-flight encryption of data
    • Message level retrieval
    • Block level backup
    • Client determined retention limits
    • Staff, infrastructure and computing resources
    • Semi-annual simulations
    • SLA driven results based on specific RTO and RPO
    • Recovery to Fandotech virtual systems after client declares event

Fandotech Survive Business Continuance Service provides customers with the same features as the Fandotech Survive Disaster Recovery Service, but with additional support features, failover and failback management, and a constantly maintained, virtualized environment that allows a customer’s data environment to be available to users in minutes following a declared event.

This service provides a constantly replicated and synched virtual environment that is connected directly to the customer’s virtual computing infrastructure in order to meet Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO.) This allows a business to continue uninterrupted while their end-users can remotely access servers, files, databases, email and other restored business systems. Features unique to this service include:

  • Failover and failback management

Operational disaster recovery plans are essential but only work when layered with a business continuance process that more quickly restores data while providing employees with the abilities to do their jobs wherever they are located,” said John Boyd, VP of Hosting and General Manager at Fandotech. “Our new Survive service provides this essential business continuance component through trusted systems and proven processes that allow employees to continue working.”

Fandotech Acquired by Industrial Defender Enabling New Backup and Disaster Recovery Services for Industrial Control Systems

Survive™ Services Safeguard Uptime, Reduce Staffing Burdens & Fulfill Compliance Requirements

Foxborough, MA, June 26, 2012 – Industrial Defender, the leader in automation system management for security, compliance, and change management for Industrial Control Systems (ICS), today announced the acquisition of Fandotech LLC, a provider of backup and disaster recovery services. The acquisition enables Industrial Defender to debut Survive™ Services, the Company’s new backup and disaster recovery offering for ICS. Survive Services are built upon Industrial Defender’s Automation Systems Manager (ASM) solution and leverages the capabilities of Fandotech, which adds new data center facilities and over a decade of backup and recovery expertise to Industrial Defender’s portfolio. Industrial Defender’s ASM solution:

  • Integrates security, compliance and change management into one solution
  • Improves operational effectiveness
  • Offers a unified view across heterogeneous ICS environments
  • Reduces the manual tasks associated with change management and compliance activities
  • Significantly diminishes security vulnerabilities

Industrial Defender is introducing its Survive Services solution in response to the significant changes in the ICS threat landscape, complexity of operational systems, increases in field devices, and interconnectivity between information systems, the Internet, and other infrastructures. In addition, regulatory requirements, such as NERC CIP, have placed increased demands on operations staff tasked with keeping their production assets and systems up and running. Survive Services are built upon Industrial Defender’s deep domain expertise in industrial control environments, its ASM technology platform, and years of experience with managed security services for operational technology environments.

“Control systems must be available at all times in order to ensure the reliability of critical operations. As described in the Pike Research report, Industrial Control Systems Security, the challenges of managing these heterogeneous, complex, system environments places a heavy burden on existing staff. With regulatory pressure from NERC CIP requiring backup and recovery processes, the need to improve system availability and business continuity is urgent,” declared Bob Lockhart, Senior Analyst at Pike Research. “Because of internal resource constraints, organizations can benefit from highly experienced providers who understand the unique challenges of operational technology and have back-up and recovery options specific to industrial control systems.”

“The issue is simple. Critical infrastructure operators need their staff to be focused on maintaining uptime of their facilities. However, operations professionals are challenged by the expanding complexity and connectivity of heterogeneous systems that manage that operational environment,” said Brian Ahern, CEO of Industrial Defender. “Our Survive Services are designed to provide essential backup and disaster recovery functionality for operational management systemswhile providing customers a restoration strategy to minimize unplanned outages. Acquiring Fandotech was a strategic investment we made in order to offer new operational continuity services to our customers and markets. With expert staff and outstanding data center facilities, we can now offer customers the peace of mind that no matter what happens, Industrial Defender can help them maximize their plant uptime by quickly enabling recovery from unforeseen events, meeting compliance mandates, and reducing their security exposures, without placing additional demands on operations staff.”

Industrial Defender recently completed the acquisition of Fandotech, a Connecticut-based backup and recovery firm with deep roots in infrastructure and application hosting. Fandotech president, John Boyd said, “Our team has been managing backup and recovery for clients globally with managed services and world-class data centers.” Reflecting on his professional roots in the power industry, John added, “I’ve had my finger on the pulse of the ICS conversation for 30 years and it’s exciting to come full circle with this recent acquisition and work closely with Industrial Defender’s customers in the ICS market.”

With Industrial Defender’s highly secure, SSAE/16 Type II, 24x7x365 data center facility and experienced, fully-certified operational staff, integrating the capabilities of Fandotech combined with Industrial Defender’s ASM technology provides the components necessary to offer a set of managed services that meet the unique operational technology challenges of ICS environments and will stand up to NERC compliance audits.

Survive Services expands upon Industrial Defender’s 24x7 managed services to ensure that customers’ critical operational information is preserved and readily available for recovery. It provides backup and disaster recovery of critical automation system data from clients, servers, and other devices unique to the control system environment such as select intelligent electronic devices (IEDs); human machine interfaces (HMIs), engineering workstations, and remote terminal units (RTUs).

  • Survive Backup Services provides a managed service that leverages software and expert security personnel to provide monitoring and remediation of onsite or offsite backup services at Industrial Defender’s SSAE/16 Type II data center. Data is securely encrypted in transit and in storage. In the event a disaster occurs at a customer location, data preserved remotely can be securely recovered and restored.
  • Survive Disaster Recovery Services: If a customer experiences unforeseen outages of an ASM or other critical servers, this service restores the customer’s remote backups to a back-up server hosted at Industrial Defender’s data center. This service affords customers the benefit of operational continuity while repairing or rebuilding their primary infrastructure.

Fandotech Makes MSPmentor Global Top 100 List for 2012

This year, MSPmentor's Top 100 list has gone global! Fandotech is pleased to announce that we've made the fifth annual MSPmentor Global Top 100 list for 2012.

When asked about our ranking, John Boyd, President of Fandotech, said, "We're pleased and privileged to rank as one of MSPmentor's top 100 MSPs in the world for 2012. We'll continue to advance and work hard to serve the needs of our clients."

The MSPmentor 100 is an annual survey conducted October through December by MSPmentor and its owner, Nine Lives Media, a division of Penton Media. Instead of ranking MSPs merely by total revenue, they calculate an index measurement using such metrics as overall managed services revenue, overall managed services revenue growth, percentage managed services revenue growth, managed services revenue per employee, number of devices managed, and other data points comparing year-over-year results. This index approach ensures small, midsize and large MSPs from around the world are recognized on the MSPmentor 100.

Fandotech Ranks No. 1507 on the 2011 Inc. 500|5000

Inc. Magazine Unveils Its Annual Exclusive List of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies—the Inc.500|5000

Inc. magazine ranked Fandotech NO. 1507 on its fifth annual Inc. 500|5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation's fastest-growing private companies. The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy—America’s independent entrepreneurs. Online retailer ideeli tops this year’s list. Fandotech joins Spirit Airlines, television maker Vizio, Honest Tea, Dunkin Donuts, and Metrokane, makers of the Rabbit corkscrew, among other prominent brands featured on this year’s list.

“Our consistent presence on the Inc. 5000 list over the past three years is an indication of our endurance and growth in a difficult economy. We are poised to emerge and continue to grow through the next year, and we look forward to many more years on the Inc. 5000,” says John Boyd, president of Fandotech.

In a stagnant economic environment, median growth rate of 2011 Inc. 500|5000 companies remains an impressive 94 percent. RAIN Insurance Provides Aid to Tornado Victims

June 15, 2011—On Wednesday, June 1, 2011 a tornado outbreak caused damage across Western Massachusetts indiscriminately devastating commercial and residential zones. Square One Children’s Center was one such business that was severely hit by the storm.

Day 0: No one was hurt but the building was condemned by FEMA and no one was permitted to re-enter the building to retrieve personal or professional items.

Day 1: On Thursday, June 2 at 9:20 am, Square One officially declared “an emergency” to trigger its disaster recovery plan as it relates to their IT infrastructure. The servers were still accessible remotely though the building was condemned and a backup of the most recent data was established. At the same time we imported all of the Square One servers into the Total Recall Virtual infrastructure. With the two above items completed by 3:00 pm EST on June 2nd we kicked off the restore of all of Square One’s latest data.

Day 2: The restore finished by 5:00 am EST on Friday June 3. By 10 am EST the authoritative AD restore was completed to bring their Active Directory up to the latest configuration and basic services were operational by 10 am EST.

Day 3/ 4: The Fandotech team monitored further restoration services over the weekend.

Day 5: By start of business on Monday June 5 all core functionality was available and Fandotech technicians continued to work with Square One IT staff to reconfigure connectivity to the three remote sites that were still operational. This was complete and fully operational by June 6 (Day 5).

Day 8: Displaced Square One employees physically move into the Fandotech, West Springfield office.

Day 9: Square One processes payroll on time.

Square One was enrolled in Fandotech’s Boomerang Total Recall disaster recovery service. Having this “insurance policy” meant they were equipped with a solid roadmap to IT infrastructure recovery designed to meet their specific RTO (Recovery Time Objective).

Behind the scenes Fandotech worked diligently to bridge the gap from their disaster recovery to more of business continuance strategy. “Business continuance” is coordinating remote and mobile workers to work from home, while finding an interim location, ensuring the HR processes and employee communications are seamless including scheduling a full time Fandotech technician for three weeks to manage the deployment of new equipment. Although such a formal plan was not in place, Square One was able to leverage their relationship with Fandotech and benefit from their years of experience. Such services go well beyond having a reliable backup rendering their monthly “insurance policy” payments since July of last year, priceless.

Fandotech Gets Manachester High School Students Involved

April 23, 2010—Daniel Minakhom, a junior at Manchester High School, has enlisted as an honorary member of the Fandotech team through the end of the school year. Daniel will spend 7 weeks shadowing different departments within the company and learning how to navigate specialized software used to organize, track and publish projects.

At the age of 16 he’s not sure what career path he’d like to pursue, “But having the skills I have obtained during my internship in computer web design is something I really want to have a future part in,” Daniel commented. In learning to create and manage his own website, Daniel has drawn on his passion for MHS Football with the hopes of promoting team pride and community unity. (Check out his site at http://dm.cms.fandotech.com.)

Fandotech’s web developer, Craig Samson, has been mentoring Daniel since he began the 7-week program. “I see this as an opportunity to provide Daniel with real-world practical skills that he can later apply in any job. Understanding the concept of a billable hour and learning how to interact with clients are skills he can use in any market,” said Samson. Commenting on the mutual benefits, Samson added, “We stand to learn a thing or two from him as well regarding the new generation and emerging demographic of IT solution consumers. It’s a pleasure having him as part of the team!”

Fandotech has supported MHS students for over eight years, through internship opportunities, coaching, and job shadowing, as well as classroom exercises in real-world problem solving. When asked about Fandotech’s involvement with the high school, John Boyd responded, “The management team is committed to this outreach because our future workforce is shaped by influencing intelligent young people to aim at the right targets.” Again, underscoring a mutual exchange of benefits, the Fandotech President echoed, “Fandotech also gains insight into the value young people place on technology. Daniel taught us that a website he is developing is not just about having a place to capture and display statistics for his high school football team to college scouts…to him it is about building community and pride. That kind of thinking elevates us all! With this experience I hope that Daniel will continue to see that technology is a great tool for leadership in whatever career he decides to pursue.”

When asked what he hoped to gain from the program, the thoughtful junior responded, “I’d like to understand how to run a well organized business and to take away some knowledge from every department.”

Having already built a content managed website and working alongside our technicians manning phones in the Technical Assistance Center (TAC), it would appear he’s well on his way!
