Navigating the Content Manager

After signing into your website, a variety of new objects appear on your page. This section attempts to explain what these objects are for and how you can use them to customize your site.

The Control Panel
At the top of your webpage after signing in, you will see the Control Panel. The Control Panel may at first appear as a collapsed horizontal gray bar that looks like this:

Collapsed Control Panel

To view the full Control Panel, click the "Show Control Panel" link to the right of the bar. The full Control Panel looks like the following:

Control Panel

Note that you may collapse the Control Panel by again clicking the "Show Control Panel" link in the upper right corner.

The Control Panel centralizes many of the common functions of managing a website. We will now go through the most common features.

Control Panel Modes

Highlighted in the screenshot above is the Mode control for the content manager. There are three modes to choose from:

  • View. Allows you to see your site without the all the pane labels and other edit controls that appear when you sign in to edit your site.
  • Edit. Allows you to see all the edit objects on your page so that you can add modules, move them around, etc.
  • Design. Allows you to see the "design" of your site without all of the module content.

Control Panel Page Functions

The six page functions (shown above) group together several useful features into one cluster. We will describe the four most useful Page Functions below.

  • Add. Click this button to add a new page to your site. You will be given the chance to thoroughly configure and customize it.
  • Copy. Click to copy the current page onto a new page. Again, you will be given the chance to customize it.
  • Delete. Deletes the current page (after asking for confirmation). Note that once the page is deleted, it can be recovered in the Recycle Bin.
  • Settings. Click this button to edit the configuration options of the current page.

Import and Export are more advanced features that may be discussed in a future Support document.

Control Panel Add New Module

The central portion of the Control Panel (highlighted above) let you add content to the current page (in the form of "modules"). You can add either a new module to your page, or copy an existing module from another page on your site. Modules are discussed thoroughly in the next Support document.

Control Panel Common Tasks

The right-most section of the Control Panel (highlighted above) contains icons for Common Tasks, as follows:

  • Site. Brings you to the Site Settings page, discussed in more detail in a later Support document.
  • Users. Brings you to the User Accounts page, where you can add, update, and delete users from your site.
  • Roles. Brings you to the Security Roles page, where you can configure different categories of users.
  • Files. Brings you to the File Manager, for viewing and managing folders and files within your site.
  • Help. Brings you to the Content Manager's help documentation. Mostly for those deeply interested in the system.
  • Solutions. Brings you to the Solutions Explorer. Note that you do not have sufficient permission to install additional modules into the system. Contact us for more information.

Panes
In addition to the Control Panel, you will see that your page is divided up into a series of labeled dotted-line areas, called panes (these will be visible only when the Edit mode is chosen in the Control Panel). A few notes about panes:

  • An empty pane will collapse and be invisible when not in Edit mode.
  • The panes are typically "stretchy" and will expand to fit the content you place in them.
  • The available panes will differ from one site design to the next (so yours may differ from those shown below).

Panes and Other Objects

We've labeled a few other objects shown in the screen capture above.

  1. Pane labels. These labels are only visible in Edit mode, and are for your reference to help with placement of modules.
  2. A menu indicator. The menu pops up when you click the arrow; it contains a number of useful commands for manipulating the module.
  3. Edit Text link. Takes you to the module content editor so that you can insert or edit the content in the module.
  4. Print and Settings icons. The Print icon pops up a printer friendly version of the module for printing. The Settings icon takes you to the module settings page so that you may edit the module's configuration and options.

Other Page Controls
Some additional controls are also visible on the page when you are in Edit mode. Let's review these controls.

Edit Title Pencil

When you hover your mouse over a title, a light blue pencil button appears just above the title (shown above). Editing is discussed thoroughly in the next Support document.

In addition to the floating pencil and toolbars, there is a small menu indicator just to the left of the module title (visible only in Edit mode); the indicator is item B in the illustration above.

Module Menu

Shown above is the menu that appears when you click the indicator. The options on the menu are discussed thoroughly in the next Support document.

Edit Settings Icon

In the lower left corner of the modules you will see the icon shown above. This pencil-on-paper icon takes you to the module settings page, where you can edit the module's configuration.

The Admin Menu
The last new item to appear on your page when you are in Edit mode is the Admin menu.

Admin Menu

If your site has a horizontal menu along the top, you will see the Admin menu appear on the right side, as shown above.

Admin Menu

If your site has a vertical menu along the left, you will see the Admin menu appear at the bottom of the menu, as shown above.

Admin Menu

If you expand the menu, you will see the choices above. We'll document a few briefly here, but the most important ones are discussed much more thoroughly in a later Support document.

  • Site Settings. Allows you to configure site-wide settings.
  • Pages. Allows you to see and manipulate all the pages on your site.
  • Security Roles. Allows you to create different roles for your users.
  • User Accounts. Allows you to create, edit, and delete users.
  • Site Log. Allows you to see a handful of reports about how your site is doing.
  • File Manager. Lists and manages the files and folders in your site.
  • Recycle Bin. Lets you recover pages and modules that you've deleted.
  • Event Viewer. Lets you look under the hood and see what sort of problems your users have encountered while using the site.
